Madurai City Police
The Madurai City Police Commissionerate was formed on 14.04.1990 from the erstwhile Madurai South District, it covers the Jurisdiction of 100 wards of entire Madurai corporation limits from the newly added Police stations limit from 01.01.2015. Madurai is the birth place of \’Tamil\’ one of the oldest languages in India. It is also called as Athens of the East, City of Festival, City of Four Junctions, Temple city and Sleepless city. Madurai is the oldest and Second Largest City in Tamil Nadu, having the world famous Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple at its core.
Madurai city covers 147.977 Km area has a total population of 14,62,420 persons (2011 Census) whereas the Madurai Urban areas comprising the city and surrounding settlements accommodates a population of 11,94,665 persons.
Madurai City Police headed by the Commissioner of Police and under his supervision, one Deputy Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, one Deputy Commissioner of Police for Crime, one Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic, one Deputy Commissioner of Police Head Quarters, one Deputy Commissioner of Police Armed Reserve Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Assistant Commissioners of Police- Category-I – 15, Assistant Commissioner of Police-Category-II – 3, Inspectors of Police – Category-I – 51, Inspectors of Police – Category-II – 13, Sub-Inspector Police-Category-I-119, Sub-Inspector of Police –Category-II-41, Police Constables-3,126. Madurai City Police comprises 4 law & Order Ranges, 4 Crime Ranges of Town, TTL, Tallakulam, Annanagar and AC-ADC for AWPS Range, having jurisdiction over 25 Police Stations (including 4-AWPS).The Police stations are B1.Vilakkuthoon, B2.Temple, B3.Teppakulam, B4.Keeraithurai, B5.SouthGate, B6.Jaihindpuram, V1.Avaniapuram covering the Town range. C1.ThideerNagar, C2.Subramaniapuram, C3.S.S.Colony, C4.Thilagarthidal, C5.Karimedu, V1.Thirupparankundram, W1.Thirunagar covering the TTL range. D1.Tallakulam, D2.Sellur, D4.KoodalPudur covering Tallakulam range. E1.K-Pudur, E2.Mathichiyam, E3.Anna Nagar, E4.GRH covering Annanagar range . AWPS-TKM(North), AWPS-Town, AWPS-South, AWPS-Thirupparan kundram cover under Anti-Dowry cell. Traffic Investigation Wings are functioning at Karimedu, Tallakulam and Control room campus which investigate road accident cases, Two Traffic Ranges (Town and Tallakulam) with Ten Traffic stations are functioning traffic regulation. A separate Mounted branch for crowd control and a Dog squad for crime purpose is present.
Maintenance of Law and Order, prevention and detection of Crime, regulation of Traffic and enforcement Prohibition Act are the main public related duties of Madurai City Police.
